We are delighted to announce this year’s Consumer Champions:
Lifetime Achievement Award
Senator Chuck Hufstetler, R-Rome, Chair, Finance Committee, for consistently standing on the side of consumers. In 2018, he stood up to Georgia Power in the face of rising Plant Vogtle costs and passed legislation sunsetting the Nuclear Energy Financing Act. In the same year, he introduced legislation aimed to protect Georgia consumers from unexpected out-of-network emergency medical bills. We first recognized Sen. Hufstetler in 2014 as our Champion for Healthcare Access for working to increase the number of Georgians with health insurance and better leverage the state’s healthcare dollars, which he continues to do today.
Champion for Transparency
E&E News reporter Kristi E. Swartz for dogged pursuit of the truth exposing deliberately misleading statements made by Dalton Utilities to legislators, citizens and the media. Documents she obtained through Open Records requests show the utility wanted to change the law so they could issue revenue bonds to cover higher Plant Vogtle costs without a public vote. Being honest and transparent is paramount when dealing with our elected legislators.
Champion for Community Education
Venus Lockett, Founder and Chief Empowerment Officer at Urban Asset Builders, for her tireless efforts to improve the economic well-being of Georgia families. Venus has been providing financial literacy education in Georgia for many years. As the State Chair for Money Smart Week Georgia, she brings local leaders, banks and community-based organizations together to share resources and knowledge to help Georgians build wealth and achieve their goals.
We are proud to recognize these Consumer Champions on September 27! Please mark your calendars and plan to join us.
